1. Swim with Sea Turtles

As far as unique experiences go, the opportunity to swim with sea turtles is something you can only get from a handful of locations in the world. You’ll find a number of beaches throughout Cancun that are known for their populations of leatherback, loggerhead, and green turtles, especially the south point of Isla Mujeres, where you can even take night swims and dives along the local coral reef.

2. Visit the Heart of the Mayan Civilization

The Mayan civilization originated in the Yucatan around 2600 BC and rose to prominence around AD 250, spreading its power across modern day Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, El Salvador, and northern Belize. Today, travellers to Cancun can visit one of the most important locations in Mayan history, Chichen Itza, with its breathtaking monuments including El Castillo and the Columns in the Temple of a Thousand Warriors, plus a treasure trove of religious iconography.

3. The Beaches

Cancun is home to a number of long and wide stretches of golden and white sand beaches lapped by pristine turquoise water. Mingle with fellow visitors on popular resort beaches like Playa Delfines and Playa Forum, where you can relax with cocktails in a cabana. Alternatively, head to a more isolated spot such as Playa Norte (North Beach) on Isla Mujeres, where you’ll find the only beach in Cancun from which to watch the sun set over the water.

4. The Food

Mexican food is one of the world’s most popular cuisines, and if you thought you loved it before visiting Mexico you’ll have a whole new appreciation after tasting from the source. Whether you’re snacking on tacos or dining on local dishes like cochinita pibil, pescado tikin xic, or panuchos, you’ll quickly realise the food in Cancun is worth the visit alone.

The region offers a wide range of bars, pubs, and clubs that consistently bring in some of the world’s biggest artists and DJs. Your problem won’t be finding something fun to do each night, but narrowing down your choices of where to go!

From tasty food and relaxing beaches, to historical sites and close encounters with wildlife, what else could you ask for from one of the world’s greatest holiday destinations?
