French woman in English Canada. Occasionally: speaks Mandarin or Spanish, bitches about the Canadian weather, writes left-wing rants, gives test to her students so that she can read the paper and have breakfast, speaks of cultural difference or goes backpacking across the world. And enjoys Canada as her new home.
A La Playa
We woke up this morning dazed and confused. Why am I not cold? Who are these people singing drunkenly in Spanish? Why is this lady knocking at the door asking if we want la limpieza?
Oh right. Cancún.
Hello Cancún!
Our day started early, another departure before sunset. We always seem to get the first flight of the morning in Ottawa. I don’t think I have ever seen the airport in daylight.
Pre-traveling Rush
I’ve been running for two weeks. Metaphorically of course—I don’t have time to run unless it’s after the bus.
It was to be expected: the pre-traveling rush is always intense. I had to wrap up work projects, prepare for the fact we are leaving for seven weeks and in between, keep up with the usual stuff such as grocery shopping and sleeping.
Picture of the Week: Canadian "I Love You"
The other day, I was shopping at Herbs & Spice, a food store on Bank Street. I walked out carrying heavy bags and in a hurry to go back home, and fell face to face with this sign from the shop next door, Wilde’s: “Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a dildo”.
I was sort of taken aback for a second, then it made me giggle like a schoolgirl.
10 Ways to Not Become Poor in Canada
Christmas shopping is underway in most parts of North America and a lot of consumers took advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. So, how to not become poor in Canada? How to manage your money smartly?
Here are ten useful tips.
Picture of the Week: Snow Melting
I used to be very excited to see snow but the novelty ran out after two of three winters there. The first snowfall is often beautiful and it’s weird to see the city blanketed in white—the change of scenery is brutal, especially when it’s very cold and snow does stay on the ground. But Canada’s harsh winters can also be a pain, a hindrance to everyday life.
Going Digital
I’m the kind of person who reads a book a day (and because OCTranspo is rarely on time, I have the chance to do so). Like most women, I carry my life in my bag, plus a couple of books (just in case I finish one, I like to have a backup). Some of my friends have tried to get me to switch to an eBook reader but I reacted like a granny. “It’s gonna hurt my eyes! It’s not the same as paper!” I protested.
My Travel ABC
Katherina’s motto is “Eat, Travel, Photography”—with such a tagline, it’s not wonder that I’m reading her articles religiously! Her travel blog, 100 Miles Highway, can give you a pretty bad case of wanderlust.
She recently completed her Travel ABC, and tagged me for this special travel meme.
