This is The End of Our French Christmas

After countless chaussons aux pommes and pains aux raisins, after catching up with family gossip, after enjoying a snow-free Christmas, off we go again!

I like Nantes. It’s my hometown, my “laojia” like Chinese say. It’s a cozy place where most of my relatives live and I know it like the back of my hand—the narrow streets, the cafés, the best bakeries and the off-the-beaten-track landmarks, the shops that closed years ago, the parks, the château…

It’s comfortable. It doesn’t change. Fitting into a vie française is easy, my Frenchness hasn’t been erased, it’s there, somewhere.

Yet I have another home now in Canada and I don’t think I would enjoy living in France full-time. When I visit, I am a tourist. I don’t have to worry about work or money much. I take advantage of all the good sides of France and I ignore the downsides.

I’d rather keep it that way.

Bye, Nantes!
