You poor thing... but I know exactly what you are talking about. I moved to South Africa and got a job as a receptionist when I was 18. I could speak English (school English) but not Afrikaans. I was told I had a funny accent. Most South Africans are bilingual so they can switch to English but there's no escaping those Afrikaans surnames! I used to get into so much trouble in the beginning for not having the names right. So I asked for the spelling every time I answered the phone - I still do it to this day out of pure habit!
