Townships of Head, Clara and Maria

September 13, 2010 – 9:32 am | 12 Comments

After Pembroke and Rapides-Des-Joachims, we followed the Trans-Canada Highway, looking for places to explore on that rainy week-end. As soon as I saw a sign saying “Head, Clara and Maria”, I wanted to check out the place. What a funny name!
The townships stretch along 60 kilometers of Highway 17. All the activities are located nearby the road, the rest is mostly wilderness.

Rapides-des-Joachims, Québec

September 8, 2010 – 10:17 am | 12 Comments

After Pembroke, we headed to Deep River and spent the night there (more on that later). The following day, the weather was a little bit better, albeit chilly. We drove to Rapides-Des-Joachims, a small village located on an island in the middle of the Ottawa River.

Pembroke, Ontario

September 6, 2010 – 9:03 pm | 13 Comments

To celebrate the last long week-end of the summer (Labour Day was today), we decided to take a short trip to rural Canada. We hit the road on Saturday morning and followed the bumpy Trans-Canada highway. Our first stop was in Pembroke, Ontario, 150 km from Ottawa.

Tips For Night Pictures (II)

September 4, 2010 – 9:38 am | 14 Comments

London, Paris, Toronto, Ottawa, Nantes, Beijing, Buenos Aires… I love roaming around at night. It’s a chance to capture a different atmosphere, to show the other side of a city.
But taking good night pictures is challenging at first. Pictures can be too dark, too bright, hopelessly blurry… Been there, done that!
So here are my five tips to take better night photo.

A Rainy Day

August 25, 2010 – 12:45 pm | 16 Comments

In Ottawa, it doesn’t rain, it pours. You barely get any warning at all: one minute, the sky is grey and you feel a drop of water, the next one you are as soaked as if you had taken a shower. Similarly, thunderstorms can be quite impressive in the area: flash floods and power outages are not that rare. It’s part of our severe weather-prone country, I guess.

The Byward Market

August 23, 2010 – 12:09 pm | 8 Comments

The Byward Market is somewhat of a fixture in Ottawa. It is located downtown, close to the Rideau neighborhood, between Sussex and Rideau St. There is a main market building (very similar to Kensington Market in Toronto or to The Forks in Winnipeg), surrounded by an open-air market on George, York, ByWard and William Streets.

Warm Summer Night

August 21, 2010 – 10:08 am | 9 Comments

On a warm summer night, I grabbed my camera and headed to downtown around sunset. I hadn’t been around the Byward Market area at this time of the day in a while. It was close to 10 pm and the sun had barely set.
I stopped by to see my favourite sculpture in Ottawa, “Maman” the huge spider by artist Louise Bourgeois, stuck between Notre-Dame church and the National Gallery of Canada.

Lac Leamy Fireworks

August 18, 2010 – 4:43 pm | 13 Comments

This week is walking down memory lane week. First, I came back to see these amazing sculptures on the shore of the Ottawa River, at Remic Rapids, that I discovered in August 2009. And then, last Saturday, we attended the yearly Lac Leamy Fireworks Competition, like we did last year
