That's pretty.

It's a bit too fake for my liking though.

Lovely tour! I like going to Chinatown because the crowd, noise and dirt reminds me, strangely, of Indian markets... LOL

There is no China town in Oslo, Norway - so thanks for taking us with to yours. You've documented the aria very well with your photo (as always!)

Happy Sunday and a great week ahead.

Btw: I had a visit from a Singaporean in Oslo last week. You may read about my guiding through the city in my last post. Do you think you would consider to participate if I organize a blog gathering next August?

i read somewhere that san francisco's
chinatown is the largest outside of china.
but oddly, except for a few hole-in-the-wall
restaurants that stay open until early
morning (and what fun they are to visit
at 2am), it's like a ghost town at night
because most everything else shuts down.

Hello! Been a while...:)
Yes chinatowns! A haven world over for an asian immigrant like me indeed. I cannot wait for one to be set up in the moon. They are getting there with their taikonauts, in a decade or so! LOL!

@the writer - Really, it doesn't? I'm surprised. Even the relatively small city I grew up in had one.

@Linguist-in-Waiting - Chinatown in Japan? I'm surprised given the historical relations between the two countries. I knew there had to be migrations yet...

@Beth - The major ones do, for sure: Montreal, Vancouver, TO, Ottawa, Winnipeg... not sure about the others. Definitely not in Quebec city or Kingston, from what I recall.

@Nisha - Like Little Italy!

@Khengsiong - I took the pictures in the afternoon, must be why. But this is Canada, a lot of things happen either totally in the wild (i.e hiking, skiing etc.) or hidden indoors (underground shopping malls in cities). That is the way city are build because of the cold. So this Chinatown doesn't have open-air markets for example, but cozy little restaurants.

@Tulsa Gentleman - I must admit I don't like most Chinese buffet-style restaurant, because the food is anything but Chinese. I mean, onion rings...! There must be exceptions though.

@Sidney - The food is indeed the main point ;-)

@Seraphine - I'd love to visit the one in SF, I've heard about it a lot. Biggest in the world, I think.

@Bluefish - I can read traditional characters but I miss some once in a while. But Chinese restaurants always have similar names, like "new something" or "double happiness" So I guess.

I didn't know there was a Chinatown in Ottawa! Can you read Traditional Chinese from the shops? I never seen anyone writing in Simplified Chinese at Chinatown.

ottowa's chinatown looks charming!
we have one in san francisco too. it's world famous, and it feels like you are stepping into another world. i love listening to the sing-songy way the people talk. the neighborhood is mostly restaurants, trinket stores and ethnic groceries. There's a good chinese herbal store too.
