Funny reading. We Americans do way to much drinking but it does appear there is less drinking and driving as the penalties are way heavy and police are everywhere waiting to write tickets.

You're funny :-). A great read, seriously.
It's kind of like driving a mile down the road to the gym, then walking two miles on the treadmill, then driving back home -- instead of just walking to the gym and back.... just doesn't quite make sense to me, though it seems to make sense to a lot of people.

I grew up in the U.S. and then moved to Spain when I got married, and personally I think the way Europeans handle the alcohol issue is much healthier than the way Americans do. I do think some people drink too much over here, but in general most drink in moderation. When my husband was young, people would let kids try alcohol at a young age, but that has changed over the years. My children still have not tried alcohol and they are 12, 10, and 8, and as far as I know most kids that age here don't drink, even at weddings and other celebrations. There is a growing tendency toward binge drinking on the weekend among teenagers, but this isn't too different to what happens in America when someone throws a party when their parents are out. I remember kids asking older people to buy alcohol for them and the whole fake ID thing when I was in school, it was an obsession for lots of them simply because it was prohibited (what could be more tempting than something that's not allowed). I think the important thing is to teach kids that alcohol is potentially dangerous and that moderation is the key (as with most things in life).

Zhu
Sorry have not been visiting - last days at work so am busy as hell, and I still have that meme you tagged me that I have to do.

This is an interesting topic and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, Singapore is not tagging far behind.... apart from owning guns.

Binge drinking used to be rare. The legal drinking age in France is 14 years old to buy beer (beer isn’t alcohol, right ?), 16 years old for wine (wine is cultural, right ?) and 18 years old to buy distilled alcoholic beverages (kids can wait for these strong shit from the English world… right?).

OMG that was hilarious!! Hahahaha, I'm dying from laughter...

Wonderful post like usual.

In Australia, our limit is 18 for all alcoholic drinks so it's not bad at all.

But you sound awefully cynical about Ontario hahaha! Can't be as bad as that :P

You know it is so funny, the big difference between Americans and Europeans. I myself never understood American thinking or laws... I think they are so backwards. Americans will lay down their lives for dolphins and whales, but will not help their fellow humans who have no food to eat or homes to live in. I just don't get it.

I am not much of a drinker...I'm a cheap date, often settling for a water and cup of espresso after dinner.

Great post, Zhu!!

--sebastian

Din : yes, that too... I mean, gov' love putting taxes on alcohol and see the money flow !

itelli : hi, thanks for visiting ! Whenever I hear about Scotland I think of the movie Trainspotting - sorry :D

I never quite understood the pub opening hours in the UK generally speaking (dry hours etc.). I wonder how people can remember them anyway !
