Let’s be honest about it, when it comes to being healthy with our food, a lot of us think that life has to become boring. I mean, you’ve had one salad, you’ve had them all, right? The truth is that being healthy only has to be as boring as you make it. If every day you have a salad for lunch with chicken, tuna or ham, after a while it’s going to get boring. To keep healthy food interesting and appealing, you need to mix things up now and then. There are so many ways you can make being healthy exciting; it’s just a case of being willing to get creative with your diet.

Healthy eating has become more and more popular over the past few years. This has meant that when it comes to being healthy, there’s plenty of inspiration around. Pinterest, Instagram, and We Heart It are all packed full of ideas and inspiration for making healthy eating more fun and enjoyable. Believe it or not, it’s easier than you would think.

Still not convinced that being healthy doesn’t have to be boring – then have a read of the tips and ideas below.

Swap unhealthy foods for healthier alternatives

Okay, so the most common misconception about swapping to being healthy is the fact that you have to cut out your favorite food. That’s not true, you might have to cut down on it, but you don’t have to cut it out altogether. Being healthy is about creating a balanced and nutritious diet, it’s not about excluding certain food groups. That being said, if you want to be able to eat lots of your favorite food, you may need to find a way to make it healthier.

For instance, if you’re a major pasta lover, you could consider swapping from wheat pasta to zucchini. Or, if you’re pizza mad, you could swap from having a normal pizza to making one with a cauliflower base. It’s small changes like these that can make all the difference. It’s not just savory foods you can do this with, it also works with sweet foods, like ice cream. A great alternative to ice cream is frozen yogurt – especially if it’s homemade.

Invest in tech

This might sound like a strange one, but hear me out on this. If you want to ensure that being healthy is as enjoyable and not boring as possible, invest in the right tech.

Traditional frying might be a big no-no when it comes to being healthy, but it’s no longer your only option. How about treating yourself to an air fryer? In case you don’t know what this is, it’s a fryer that cooks food with super hot air and a tiny amount of oil. It’s much healthier than traditional deep fat fryers but still creates chips that are wonderfully crispy.

Do you love smoothies – how about getting a smoothie maker? These are fantastic for making smoothies as they come with a perfect sized cup and a blade that can cut through fruit and ice in seconds. Making the perfect breakfast smoothie – yummy!

It’s not just kitchen tech that can make healthy eating more fun; apps can also be a great help. There are thousands of cooking apps to choose from, many of which are packed with healthy, nutritious recipes and inspiration. These can come in handy when it comes to ensuring that your diet is vibrant, varied, and exciting. There are also apps that help you to note down what you’re eating to ensure that you’re getting enough of each food group.

Get creative with your meals

While you may not be able to have takeaways and ready meals, that doesn’t mean being healthy has to be boring. Get creative with your meals and you can make eating healthily much more enjoyable. You don’t have to have basic meals – salads, meat and two veg, soup, etc., you can be healthy and have interesting and exciting meals. It’s just a case of getting the inspiration for them.

The best way to do this is to buy a recipe book that’s packed full of healthy recipes and each week choose a selection of meals out of it. This will give you new meals to make and try, helping to keep mealtimes interesting and exciting. You’ll find that if you’re constantly trying new things, eating healthily won’t seem as boring.

Hold a potluck supper

Get all of your closest friends together for a special healthy eating evening where you all bring a pot of your favorite healthy dish. This is just like a potluck supper; it’s just that every dish has to be healthy. Ask each person to bring a recipe for their dish, so that whoever likes it, can try and make it themselves. This is a great way to try out lots of delicious dishes that otherwise you may not have tried.

As well as trying each other’s dishes and swapping recipes, you can also share tips and ideas about healthy eating. If you struggle with a certain part of it, such as healthy breakfasts for eating at work, for example. You may find someone else has an idea that you could try, such as taking overnight oats with you to the office for breakfast. Chat about what you struggle with when being healthy and see what other people can recommend. It’s good getting ideas from other people as it can make being healthier easier.

Don’t be afraid to have a treat

There’s nothing that makes being healthy more boring than never being able to have a treat. Remember, the key to success is eating everything in moderation. This means that it’s fine to have a treat now and then, just as long as you’re healthy for most of the time. Allow yourself to have a treat now and then, whether that’s a piece of cake or a bag of crisps; it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you let yourself have a little treat now and then.

If you fancy a treat but are trying to stay on track, consider making something yourself. If you bake a lemon cake yourself or use the YouTube channel for Hampton Creek to bake cookies, you know what’s gone into them. Unlike when you buy them readymade. You can also opt to swap unhealthy ingredients like processed sugar, for a healthier option like agave syrup. By making your treats yourself, you can ensure that they are as healthy as possible.

Find healthy recipes for your favorite meals

Whether you’re pizza mad, love chips, or crave burgers, the chances are that you think you can’t eat them when you’re being healthy. However, that’s not necessarily the case. If you find a healthy alternative to your favorite meal, you can have it as often as you like.

Let’s say you love having a burger and chips but don’t want the fat or calories that come with most burger meals. Head to your local butchers for some good quality beef patties that are as low in fat as possible. Get some wholemeal or best of both burger buns, some cheese, salad bits, and a bag of potatoes to make healthy homemade chips. It may not taste exactly like your favorite McDonald’s burger but it will be much healthier and should satisfy your cravings.

Or, say you’re pizza mad, as mentioned above, you could swap from your regular dough to a cauliflower pizza crust. This would be much healthier and would allow you to have your favorite treat. As long as you make the tomato sauce from scratch and don’t use too much cheese, you could have pizza as often as you like.

Make fruit fun

A lot of people presume that fruit can’t be fun and delicious. However, that’s not the case. If you’re creative about how you prepare your fruit, you can make munching on fruit instead of a chocolate bar, incredibly enjoyable. It’s just a case of being smart about how you prepare and serve your fruit. I know it can get tedious after a while of eating lots of fruit, but when you start to feel like that, it’s time to find a new way to make it fun.

If for example, you’re getting bored of raw fruit, consider cooking it up into a healthy crumble. Or perhaps you could slice it up and add it to healthy, homemade flapjacks? The more creative you are, the better. If you find yourself struggling for ideas, take the time to do some research online. There are plenty of fantastic ideas for how you can make fruit more interesting; it’s just a case of taking the time to get inspiration.

So the answer is no, being healthy doesn’t have to be boring. It can be a little dull but only if you make it dull. The truth is, if you take the time to get inspiration, try new dishes and have fun with your food, being healthy won’t be boring. It’s just a case of making healthy eating fun and enjoyable, instead of dull and boring
