A French Castle

Written by on June 29, 2010 – 5:56 am13 Comments | 2 Read this

We all have pick-up lines — mine was that I grew up nearby a castle. You know, so that North Americans could fantasize about my “oh-so-French” background. Nah, just kidding. It’s just that Nantes happens to have a castle in the center and since the city is fairly compact, well, downtown is very residential so about 50,000 of us “grew up by a castle”.

The Bouffay neighborhood is the oldest in Nantes and goes back to the medieval era, hence the castle. Today, it’s one of the city’s main landmark and it hosts a variety of exhibitions. It’s also a nice place to just relax by the moat.

You can follow our French trip here on Flickr: France (2010).

Wow! you grew up by this beautiful castle. This castle must fullfill with your childhood memories! Many children’s books have castles in the stories, and you were actually in it! :)

How beautiful!!! You must have taken those photos quite late at night. It puts me in a spell, love it!

  • Wow. This reminds me of Kronborg Castle in Helsingor, Denmark, with all the thick walls and the moat that surrounds it. Nice photos as always!

I was away and just read your last few posts. I hear you about getting a ticket at the train station in Roissy – it’s horrible. I only go 15 minutes by train to the Disney stop where my cousins pick me up and it can take over 1 hour to get the ticket! I like your pictures. I have never been to Nantes, it looks nice.
I don’t follow football so I did not know too much about the French team – just saw some pretty bad articles in the news. I do follow le Tour though and am going to buy some new yarn for my knitting during all the mornings I’ll watch it for 3 weeks. I really enjoy the shots of little towns taken by the helicopters.
They know how to demonstrate against the government or against whatever in France. Here in the US I have always been surprised at how little they demonstrate – they complain, but that’s about it. They complain about the BP spill but I don’t see mass of people walking in the streets like they would in France, or other parts of Europe for that matter.
I like your pictures – you are good – pris sur le vif. That castle looks great – the sky too. We used to have a house in the country near a castle called Vaux le Vicomte, I wrote a post about it. Here it is if you’d like to read it when you come back: http://avagabonde.blogspot.com/2009/12/return-to-vaux-le-vicomte.html.

Glad to catch up on your posts after being away for the weekend. Lots of excitement in France these days! The World Cup fiasco, the huge nation-wide manifestation.… and of course your visit! I love the pictures as always. There are so many more places in France I need to visit! Nantes is definitely on the list!

PS — Any pictures of pastries for us? :)
