A French Castle

We all have pick-up lines — mine was that I grew up nearby a castle. You know, so that North Americans could fantasize about my “oh-so-French” background. Nah, just kidding. It’s just that Nantes happens to have a castle in the center and since the city is fairly compact, well, downtown is very residential so about 50,000 of us “grew up by a castle”.

The Bouffay neighborhood is the oldest in Nantes and goes back to the medieval era, hence the castle. Today, it’s one of the city’s main landmark and it hosts a variety of exhibitions. It’s also a nice place to just relax by the moat.

You can follow our French trip here on Flickr: France (2010).

    @Cynthia — nantes was heavily bombed during WWII but I think the castle was spared. No doubt it was rebuilt to a certain extend though.

    @Nigel — Yes, I can imagine it looks somewhat exotic!

    @Agnes — Mmmm… Castles are a bit too cold for my liking ;-)

    @London Caller — I can see that! The London Tower feels a bit French actually. Or is it the other way around?!

    @khengsiong — Yes, a lot of them are. Most castles are located along the Loire River.

    @micki — :lol: I never thought of it this way, to me it was quite normal! And I heard to many bloody tales from the Middle Ages!

    @expatraveler — Not that late actually, just after sunset. Long exposures make them look brighter.

    @Linguist-in-Waiting — Thank you!

    @Vagabonde — Thank you for the praise! I can see we have similar experiences in France ;-)

    @Soleil — Pastries shots are coming up, I’ve been collecting them for 10 days. Quoi, moi, gourmande?! So many shots actually… I went picture-crazy!

    I’d love to “grow up by a castle”. Haha! Truly fascinating! Nice, cute little castle there. ;)

    A landmark, indeed. I remember spending many sunday afternoons visiting the castle when I was a kid (the alternative was Le Jardin des Plantes), and then lying on the grass as a teenager. The best memory remains when, during some renovations, we climbed up a scaffolder at night and got into one of the towers…
