Crêpes (very thin cooked pancakes) are Brittany’s national dish. They can be sweet (crêpes) and cooked with butter, sugar, chocolate honey etc. Or, they can be salty (galettes) and be filled with ham, eggs, cheese, mushrooms, spinach etc. There are a lot of crêperies (crêpes restaurants) in Nantes, and they are even sold on the market!
French also like quiches (a baked dish in a pastry crust). The most common one is the quiche lorraine, with bacon and cream, but all kind of fillings are available, like tomatoes, cheese etc.
Nantes being close to the seaside, there are also tons of seafood. The most “French” may be the oysters and the Coquille St Jacques (scallops in a scallop shell). The sea-salt is hand-harvested locally.
Cheese is of course a French favorite, with hundreds of different kinds!
Salut,
Mmmmmmmm….I am in heaven! I make crêpes and quiches at home (I am crazy about them). I already told you about my crush on cheese (so I won’t go there again), and those sandwiches…mon Dieu! They look delicious!
My mom does a delicious dish with coquille St. Jacques – with shrimps…*mouth watering*…
Great pictures, girl!
Cheers
Ooooo that looks delish! A nice idea for desert tonight…… or maybe for dinner.
I practically lived off of crepes with Nutella when I was in Paris – they are so delish! I also really liked the baguettes with hot dogs and cheese stuffed in them.
What a lovely post showing that the French kitchen is all about quality! I would love to taste some of those Cheese and a good French wine to go with 🙂
That Quiche with tomatoes looks so good! OMG! I’m hungry now!
The cheese with herbs on top looks wonderful. The quiche topped with sliced tomatos and cucumbers looks great. I have never seen or eaten Coquilles St Jacques. Are they eaten raw like oysters, or steamed like mussels? THay look so pretty. All this makes me very hungry.
J’adore les coquilles St-Jacques 🙂
Hey that cheese with spices looked interesting, although I am not a cheese person I will give it a try for sure 😀
Zhuuuuuuuuuu……you make me so hungry now 🙂
Cheese and oysters? Oh my oh my! I would love to feast on those!
I grew up eating crepes for breakfast, though, I usually just have it with a bit of maple syrup or strawberry jam. Sometimes I’ll eat them plain. My mother made them once with a cream cheese filling, with a blueberry topping. Very heavenly.
Salut Zhu,
Mmmmm; that’s why some expats stay in France; we eat so darn well.
Just lovely and it’s getting me hungry !
Though it’s strange that I never acquired the taste for oysters and seafood.But for your other photos, fine.
I’m sure that your tastebuds are happy each time you return to France !
Bises
( j’adore les crêpes au Sarrazin 🙂 )
yummy . I love crepes and quiches! 😀
I’ve never had cheese with spices before. It looks good.
@Max Coutinho – Just curious: is the way of eating similar in Portugal? I mean, bread at every meal, eating slowly etc.?
@Caroline – You’ll be addicted!
@Kirsten – Not to mention that Nutella is so much better than peanut butter! Sorry, French me speaking 😆
@RennyBA – I’m sure you would love it, I know from your blog you like good food 😉
@Guillermo – Oooops… Sorry! 🙂
@Bill Miller – Coquilles St Jacques are steamed, usually prepared with sauce etc. I’m not big on oysters either, well, all raw food to be honest. Quiches were my favorite as a student: easy to eat and cheap!
@Bluefish – Tu en trouves à Montréal?
@shionge – There are some milder cheese that it’s easier to start with. Even Feng like it now!
@Linguist-in-Waiting – Travel to France next time, you would like it!
@silverneurotic – Really? Crêpes, not pancakes? I’m surprised, because crêpe is not that famous in North America.
@barbara – I grew up by the sea so I guess I got used to seafood early. Now, I’m not big on oyster either… any raw food actually. Food in France is definitely great!
@aline – It’s goat cheese, pretty mild. The spices are not too strong.
Hey Zhu,
Yes, bread is always present in meals (unless one is on a diet lol); and at least in my house we eat slowly (because we are talking); in other households I am not sure.
Cheers
OMG! Those quiches look soooooooo heavenly! I’ve never tried them before, how sad!
And those sure are funny cooking sandwiches! 😛
I mean funny *looking* heh.
Ils ont surement dans les marches…il y a aussi un met qui s’appelle coquilles St-Jacques.
