I just thought I would add that we have put together a website that lists many of the online coupons you can find for saving on your grocery bill. Our website is oneCOUPON.ca and we think it will save you a lot of time and money.

Other tips:

Use the library. If you live in the city, membership is free and you can borrow books, CDs, software, often even a card for free museum admission, Kill-a-watt meters, etc.

Ride a bike. It will get you anywhere in the city, usually faster than the bus or streetcar, with no dependence on schedules or transfers, and is way cheaper than the cheapest car. And you'll be healthier, and make a healthier environment.

Hi Zhu,

By the time I'm through with our job where we're at right now, I am really tempted to go to Canada and shop as you suggest.LOL!

Unfortunately for me, there are no such shops and stores where we are and food is scarce for most, but really cheap if you can get your hands on some homegrown and homemade items. I avoid fish and pork because I'm wary of what they have fed on in the last few months since the disaster.

The tips you have given sounds like the shopping pattern my wife has mastered for decades. She comes home with huge bundles of tissue paper because it's offered at a big discount. I tell her that it ties up funds on a single item and perhaps a smaller bundle would suffice. :-) But who can win an argument with a woman shopper eh?

The tips are logical and very helpful, especially the reminder on taxes. I avoid credit cards like the plague and have never touched one in my entire life!

It's a great feeling to be able to connect despite playing touch and go with the power supply and the slow dial-up connection, and only on weekends. I hope this could be posted by my already overworked secretary early in the coming week. It is being in a different world. Unfortunately for citizens of this country, this is the only world they will ever know...but I hope I can change that a little. A bit risky but worth trying. What is a life without adventure eh? Take care and thanks for all your support. :-) --Durano, done!

Really good Zhu! In my case I paid for food with credit card but pay the credit card every 2 weeks. That helps building up the credit, win points if you have a points credit card and you ar keeping track of what you pay since you are paying really regularly, but it's not for everyone.

The best tip here is to ditch the plastic. It is so easy to dig a whole you will really have to work to get out of!! Another tip that I have taken advantage of as much as possible it to buy used goods when possible. I don't mean trash, but 2nd hand shops and markets, and The Salvation army often have things you need at a fraction of the price, and in addition you are helping the environment by reusing something another no longer wants.

Hi Zhu,
This is so nice of you to help newcomers with your experience.
I'm sure that a lot of people have gained from this subject.
By the way, I just gave you an award on my blog.

Enjoy ;)
