Like I said before, I always enjoy visiting Chinatowns: I often shop at the one in Ottawa, and I like hanging out at the Toronto one.
Montreal’s Chinatown (蒙特利尔唐人街) is quite small: it’s mostly one pedestrian street with an arch and many little shops and restaurants along the narrow alley, parallel to the René Levesque boulevard. It seemed to be a tight-knit community: I saw many posters advertising for activities, as well as a few associations headquarters.
You can see the full set of the pictures taken in Montreal here.
Very cool and informative. To my knowledge although Tulsa has a Chinese community of sorts I’m not aware of any Chinatown.

I think most countries now have a ‘China town’. I have just come back from backpacking trip to Malaysia & Thailand and the story is same there.
I should start posting pictures now.

As my friend Yogi said, Tulsa has no particular Chinese area. We do have some excellent ethnic Asian restaurants however. Chinese, Vietnamese. Korean, Thai, we have them all. Also a lot of Chinese lunch buffets which are mostly OK. It is very rare to find a buffet that serves really good food. There is something about a steam table that just doesn’t bring out the best in food.

That is a mini chiantown 🙂 Were they still celebrating Chinese New Year with the dragons? Any good Chinese restaurant in there?

Montreal’s Chinatown is unique – existing amidst all those signs “en français.”
I love the Arch!

It’s small, but I’m sure many Chinese live outside Chinatown…

@Yogi – really? That’s rare, most cities that I know have a Chinatown, even if it’s just one street!
@Nisha – Glad you made it back safely! Do post pictures 🙂
@Nigel – 😆 Thank you!
@Tulsa Gentleman – Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of buffets either. It is okay it you are very hungry but the food isn’t great most of the time.
@micki – I have no idea why they had a dragon dance! It’s funny actually, I spotted this guys unloading dragon heads from the trunk of their cars and minutes later, I walked into the dragon dance inside a mall.
@Beth – And most people spoke French, which really surprised me!
@Agnes – Thank you!
@Charles Dastodd – The dance was pretty fun.
@khengsiong – Yes, Chinatown is not really a place where Chinese live, it’s mostly a business area here. Same in Ottawa.
I love the Chinatown’s too… you always can see some strange things going on… and the food is delicious !
Nice pictorial !

the only thing i don’t like about chinatowns are the live turtles (offered as food) and the ducks (canard) cooked with their heads on and the baskets of chicken feet displayed in the store windows.
but chinatown (anywhere) certainly is a “colorful” place to take visitors.

Hi Zhu,
The Chinatown was neat and cozy, it had little back alleys with dubious looks just like Toronto, hehehe. We went to a store that made buns and it was very good. 🙂

Great photos!
My signicant other’s originally from Montreal and his great grandfather was a Chinese immigrant who set up a business in Chinatown. From my understanding, Montreal’s current Chinatown is only a fraction of its original size, as a good chunk of it was demolished in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and that it was only in the 1980’s that Chinatown was revived.
那里有很多来自中国北方的人吗?
那舞狮是典型的北狮哦。
马来西亚、香港等地用的是南狮。
伦敦的香港华侨多,所以也用南狮。
南狮表演有点像在打功夫;北狮则有点像耍杂技。

Every countries I visited we always make it a point to visit Chinatown and interesting to note there’s bond to have a Chinese Gate along one of the street 😉
Did you enjoy eating the wanton noodles?
I always love your gritty shots of cities. This Chinatown is different from what I am used to, most of the time, Chinatown for me is chaotic, full of people, and busy, like the ones in Osaka and Manila. But the only time I saw a rather tranquil Chinatown was in Portland, OR.

Very nice captures of the Chinatown, and very colourful too! Interesting observations too. 🙂
