Hi Zhu. Well I'm a bit late to the comments party but I did enjoy your list. And how I smiled when I saw you'd put demos as the first item ;) I totally empathise on the cheese question, too. I don't like the really stinky blue cheeses myself, but I can't imagine not being able to buy "raw" cheeses! Torture.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to do my own list, I really enjoyed it.

Hi Zhu,

LOL This is one great article! Let me comment point by point:

Demonstrations & Protests - indeed. The French love their "Manifs" LOL (we do too: this month only we have had 5 manifs - three of them organised by teachers and students - here in Portugal)...but at least they get their way most of the times. But you know something funny, last month I actually heard a French reporter saying that the French are tired of demonstrations and protests...do you think France is changing?
"when more than ten Canadians gather in front of the Parliament, it’s because they are complaining about something." LOL LOL they are calmer, eh?

An efficient railway network - Blessed be the TGV indeed! We are going to have it here too...I am anxious: it's like having Europe on your door step! And of course, Porto will practically be inside your house (300km from Lisbon)...

Cheap Magazines - oh yes...France, Portugal, Italy, Spain, the UK...all have great choices in magazines and cheap too! It's another European blessing!

Blue cheese - LOVE it!! LOL LOL @ "Now, I am not eating processed cheese either" LOL LOL I hear you on that one! C'est de la merde (pardon my French - literally)....

Liquid Soap - I don't use liquid soap (for it dries up a certain part of my anatomy), plus we have fantastic soaps here in Portugal (which leave the skin soft and hydrated).

What do I miss from home when I am living abroad? The Portuguese pastry and cakes; our cheese; our bread...what else...the sun (We have +300 days of sun per year) and the weather (it's not too cold and it's not too hot either).

Zhu, amazing post!

Cheers

Zhu - Thanks for a really interesting post. I have to say that the idea of lawyers on strike is rather frightening. What are they striking for? More crime? More litigation? Scary.

My travels in France have been too few and mostly business related in and out quickly sorts of things but always interesting. I was impressed with your food. The french take food very seriously and do a good job of it. However there are a few things that I miss when I am in away from home. This is true of other parts of the US as well as in Europe.

I miss fried chicken with steamed rice and cream gravy made from the skillet leavings. I miss REAL barbecue which I define as meat (beef, chicken, pork, etc.) when has been smoked outdoors in a wood cooker, low and slow - BBQ sauce may be added at the table is desired, but NEVER in the cooker. It requires just the right side dishes, sweet cole slaw, baked beans, iced tea, followed by apple pie and ice cream.

We do seem to have very good little family owned and operated asian restaurants although the good ones have to be carefully culled from the pretenders. I frequent a few really great little Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean places. French restaurants are harder to find and tend to be pretentious and expensive. The best French food I have had while in France was not pretentious and complicated. It was just very fresh and masterfully prepared. There was this seafood paella in Nice....

About the trains. Trans and public transportation in general is much better in most parts of the world than the in the US. In the central part of the US it is so poor as to be non-existent. We are spread out here and the population is not dense enough to warrant regular bus or train service. Even a taxi has to be summoned by telephone rather than hailed from the street. It is assumed that everyone has a car, and most do. When I am in Europe I enjoy the trains as a special treat.

I need to shut up. This is your blog, not mine, but you made me think with your list of things not available in Canada. A comparable list could be made about almost anywhere. I think that was your point. Great post.

@mogLi - Not really, Canada is pretty different, even Québec (the French part of it). And the cons thing... this is NOT why I like liquid soap best!

@Guillermo - Oh, asado...yep, delicious. I don't mind "missing" a few things and I don't really miss France anyway. But it's fun to notice some stuffs just don't travel that well! Don't apologize for your English, it's perfect ;-)

@Linguist-in-Waiting - Oh, St Agur... my favorite one with Roquefort. Funny you like, most Asians aren't into cheese. I do miss things from places that are not my home country as well.

@Bluefish - I guess it's just too cold to demonstrate. Or Canadians are too polite for that. Who knows. I'll add you to the list!

@Kirsten - I would miss the seasons as well. I love hot weather but maybe not for a lifetime...

@Seraphine - Not a chance. But Nutella isn't bad, trust me. ;-)

@NewWrldYankee - We can protest together, I'll be honored. But let's do it quietly, after all, this is Canada. I'm just afraid to get dizzy from walking in circles...

@barbara - Oh, I can just imagine. To be honest, even when I come back to France I can't believe that people are protesting... again. My last demonstration was in April 2002 I believe, right after the first round of the presidential election.

@Khengsiong - Body shampoo? I don't think I ever heard that before! It is confusing! After all, I don't have hair on my body... is it only for hairy guys???

@Breigh (Canadutch) - I still remember how surprised I was the first time I had to buy soap here... it's just a shelve of Ivory soap bar, period!

@宝茹 - FRance is almost too open to protest... not protesting is viewed as weird!

@Bluefish - I guess I think of you as an almost Danish expat but not an immigrant here, cause you've been there a long time.

@Liz - The Parisian subway is pretty old and run down though... or is it just me? I haven't taken the tube in ages, but I remember London was cleaner than Paris.

@Sidney - Yeah, wine is expensive is Canada too. But I don't drink so...

@Aiglee - N rush and no worries!

@Froggywoogie - I don't miss the bread as much because I can find some really good baguettes here. No, seriously. Thanks God but Western Europe immigrants! As for coffee... I don't drink any. And I feel like shit in mornings no matter what is in front of me

@Annie - I'm glad you wrote a lot, it was really interesting!

Even though I have never been there, I'm fascinated by Indian youth. I grew up in an old country... I can imagine the energy and the creativity emerging, that must be great. Youth are the future of a country, and considering what I know of India, the country has a great future!

Food... yeah. I can imagine that. Especially Indian food seems to require specific ingredients and seems slow to cook. Doesn't fit the busy USA lifestyle... I love the food though, and thanks to immigrants, we can sample it.

The languages are quite fascinating too. I can't believe you guys actually understand each other!

I value your input, so never hesitate to write here. You really should start a blog, I'd be your number one reader.

@Bischoff - Not really actually... I feel less and less French. I can see what you mean and I did go through a phase where I missed the country I grew up in, but I started my adult life in Canada, so to me childhood = France and now it's Canada. I guess it's harder when you leave your home country later in life...

@kyh - It's too bad, because demonstrations can be very productive. Not always. But the voice of the people ca be wise...

That said, in France, we have way too many desmonstrations.

Sorry for the link thing, I'll correct that ASAP.
