If you are a skiing enthusiast, then visiting Ellmau is a perfect option for you. This renowned ski resort is one of the best and awe-inspiring ski destinations in Austria. This beautiful ski resort, set against the majestic Wilder Kaiser Mountains, welcomes skiers of all skill levels to its beautiful snow-filled pavilion. Ellmau’s unique location attracts many visitors each and every year. The snow-capped peaks of Wilder Kaiser, tall Mountain-ash and native trees, and the quaint villages at the foothills, altogether make an inviting and picturesque setting. And whether it is winter or summer, Ellmau offers plenty of things to see and do for visitors of all ages. So, if the idea of visiting Ellmau for your next ski trip interests you, then here are some helpful tips.

Location

Ellmau is one of the largest ski areas in Austria, covering an area of over 280 kilometres in total. Nearby Kitzbuhel, which is another great ski destination, is nestled in the valleys adjoining Ellmau and is only a bus transfer from the towns at the foothills. Bus transfers between both towns are available throughout the day.

Ski Slopes

Ellmau’s slopes often originate from the back of the towns and lead through the impressive Hartkaiser Mountains. Both novice and experienced skiers will find appropriate ski runs, but this resort has a variety of slopes catering especially for beginners, families, and intermediate skiers.

Weather and Snow

Just like any other ski resort, visitors are advised to regularly check the weather reports in order to learn more about the snow conditions. As this is one of the lower resorts in Austria, the main issue is with the durability and state of the snow. Thanks to recently installed artificial snowmaking facilities, there is good snow covering practically every day of the season.

Accommodation

For this kind of getaway trips, all inclusive holiday deals are often the best way to find affordable accommodation that suit every budget. Popular destinations like this one sell out fast, so don’t forget to plan a little bit ahead of time.

Accommodation choices include a wide array of cabins, holiday homes, and bed & breakfasts. There is also a range of excellent upmarket hotels and apartments for families, couples, and groups. Nearby villages and towns also offer loads of accommodation choices including some quaint B&Bs and bungalow rentals. Currently you can find a huge range of cheap last minute deals for skiing in Ellmau this season, which will be drawing to a close in the next few months. Shop around: within the few minutes I spent researching ski holidays online, I found some great deals on accommodation as well as flights and resort transfers.

When to Visit

The peak time for skiing is from mid-December to mid-April. Ellmau is particularly popular with beginners and families, with many families visiting around Christmas and New Year. If Ellmau gets too busy for your liking, nearby villages have separate nursery slopes, especially for inexperienced skiers. If you don’t like crowds, then it’s advisable to get up early in the morning before everyone else.
