The Most Scenic Ruins You’ll Ever See Are Tulum Ruinas

I was given the “honour” to drive the Renault from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, a relatively short ride on a bumpy highway, dodging trucks, taxis and cars ignoring lanes and basic driving rules. We made it safely to Tulum and once again, we started to look for a hotel.

Our first pick—the hotel we had stayed in last time—wasn’t an option since it only had one king bed where the three of us would have had a hard time sleeping comfortably. We tried a couple of places on the main avenue but they were either full or seedy. Eventually, we settled for Hotel Nadet, a new hotel, surprisingly affordable and in a quieter street.

It was a cloudy day, but we took a chance and decided to head to the “ruinas,” the Mayan archaeological site close to Tulum Pueblo. These are not the most amazing ruinas (there are no tall pyramids and the site is fairly compact) these ones are very scenic as they are set on a steep cliff overlooking the ocean.

Luck was with us, by the time we parked the car, the rain had stopped. We walked to the entrance, bought our tickets and started to explore. Mark had decided the 30-minute nap he took during the ride to Tulum was enough and he was eager to explore—we let him run wild, a fifteen-month-old toddler in an ancient Maya site!
