There are two big markets a week in Nantes, and they are both very busy. French do love food after all.
Fruits and vegetables are not always cheaper than at the supermarket but people have their “petites habitudes” (shopping traditions) and they enjoy stopping by the same stalls week after week. They joke with sellers, taste fruits, complain about prices and happily bag a few pounds of this and that. So-and-so has the best meat, so-and-so has the freshest bread, etc.
Markets also reflect the diversity of France. While it is not as multicultural than in Canada, you can now find a lot of foods and products from Northern Africa, Asian food as well as exotic spices.
Your photos are making my mouth water! The NA spices are especially beautiful. 😀
Hey Zhu,
Mmmmmm, delicious!
My family and I are on that trend too: North African spices (we have been trying some Moroccan dishes: delicious).
French markets are a delight, and your photos took me back in time :D.
Cheers
Oh I would kill for those quiches and the goat cheese. That is one thing I miss from Europe: the amazing variety of cheese, and it seems that North Americans just don’t know anything about it.
Goat cheese… hmm… Is this North African food?
I’ve been so behind time in catching up with your updates Zhu but hey…back to routine for me so I’m glad 🙂
I can understand why people still shop at the market despite being more expensive, I do that too at the local fish stall even though I know she charges slightly more but I know she will always give me the freshest fish and not sell me if they are not fresh.
Love your colourful photos as usual Zhu and I hope you are having a great time 🙂
I always enjoy visiting outdoor market…it makes food tastes better 😉
Food yay! It even looks mouthwatering! 🙂 Did you taste any?
Oh so much lovely food! I love the colour of the spices and the delicious look of the fruits and vegetables. We have some markets like this in Norway in the summer time but much smaller. It must be wonderful to go there and pick out you dinner from stand to stand. Looks like a wonderful trip.
You’re making me hungry 😀
MMM le far…c’est bon!! Just booked my flight at Christmas!
oh those look so good! i love european markets… so many things to see, and yes, very clean!
