Bloco Da Lama (Mud People)

What Mud? It´s Just A Lovely Beach...

Still recovering from our first Carnival nights, we decided to spend the day at Jabaquara Beach, a few minutes walk from Paraty. Nice place: great sand, awesome view on the green mountains around, warm water…

A few minutes after we arrived, we met our first muddy beachgoer. Mmm… Something was definitely going on when we started seeing more and more people, covered in mud from head to toes. We walked towards where the people were coming from and discovered… a bay mud in a shallow part of the beach.

This is the tradition, we were told. The ¨Bloco Da Lama¨ (Group Of The Mud) celebrates Carnival by covering themselves in mud, dressing up as cavemen and partying on the beach.

We could not resist trying that out (and take pictures!). We basically fell into the sticky gooey mud pit, and covered ourselves with a thick layer. Yes, it does stink a bit but the mud is quite clean.

One original way to celebrate Carnival, isn´t it?!
