People of Nantes – Summer 2013 Street Photography

I take a walk around the neighbourhood every morning, rain or shine (or rather snow or shine back home). I do the same in Canada, but I rarely see anyone walking in the street there: we live in suburbia and while my morning walk is pretty bucolic, I am the only pedestrian, lost between cars lined up at the local Tim Hortons drive-through and SUVs driving by.

My parents live in Nantes’ downtown core and around 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., I witness the city waking up. On Sunday morning, I kept on bumping into drunks looking for a way back home (too much partying the night before) or trying to bum a smoke. On Monday morning, delivery trucks brought fresh fruits and veggies to the local supermarkets. Around 10 every day, waitresses and waiters take coffee tables outside and set them up before the noon rush. I see people walking or biking to work, biting in buttery croissants, having a smoke, arguing over their cellphone, putting on lipstick or parting ways at the tramway station.

People are fascinating. I feel like a spy with my camera but in fact, no one cares about it. I am invisible behind the lens… or so it seems, and it is fine by me, I don’t try to be noticed. I enjoy documenting people’s lives. So here are a few snapshots of the “People of Nantes”!
