Happy birthday, Canada… from London!
That’s right—from France, we took the Eurostar (more on that later) and are now in London for a few days. And this afternoon, we stumbled upon the Canada Day celebrations in London, in Trafalgar Square—a huge (unexpected) party!
We had a good laugh when we noticed there were even a Tim Hortons on-site for the occasion, as well as a poutine stall (£5 though!) and a bunch of Canadian flags. It felt like Parliament Hill, just noisier. For some reason, techno music was the music of choice—what, no Tragically Hip, the perfect Canadian band? Oh right, they are in Ottawa, playing at the BluesFest.
That’s awesome!
Now, that is surprising 🙂
Happy belated Canada Day, Zhu!!! I owe you an e-mail and will do it some time this weekend – in between the World Cup matches. Send kisses to Europe from me, although I’ve just returned from a visit back home (home?) myself . :):) xxx
Happy Canada Day! One year, I’ll make it into your country to help celebrate – every July we have a big family reunion just 5 miles from the border,and every year I don’t get to go 🙁 And how cool to see this in London! That’s so amazing! I don’t think I’d know WHAT to think if this happened for my country elsewhere. Awesome!
Nice! But 5 GBP poutine! No thanks. And why do I see Buffalo wings there? Isn’t that the wrong side of the border? Hehe, anyway, it’s fun nonetheless, and I am glad you enjoyed it!
haha the whole world wants to be canadian. it isn’t entirely the fault of tim hortons nor the allure of poutine.
i’m glad you are having a fun time.
i want to go to london! *sigh* maybe one day…
I was there too! How funny! I was there during field hockey games. I’ll post pictures when I get back to Poitiers.=)
@Poem – It was… unexpected!
@Nigel – I know, I wasn’t expecting such a big party.
@Ines – I hope you enjoyed your trip — it’s always nice to go say “hi” to the old continent once in a while 😉
@Ghosty Kips – I crashed a 4th of July party once, in Beijing, and it was quite fun too although rather official. You should visit Canada now that you have a passport!
@Linguist-in-Waiting – I know, the U.K is expensive but 5 pounds for poutine is rather overpriced. Not to mention that poutine is…er… not that great!
@Seraphine – I think British don’t actually have a national day — that’s what happens when you never have a revolution! 😆
@Eileen – Really? How cool! Now, I don’t think I would have been able to spot you in the crowd, it was just so busy!
that is some pricey poutine! Was there lobster on it?
I did not know about that! I guess I know where I’ll be be next July 1st 🙂
wow – looks like it would be a fun event to attend!
Ha ha… I knew that event but it was scheduled on a weekday afternoon…
Not easy to see it…
Did you visit the Canada House next to the Square?
