In 2019, the video game industry brought $4.5 billion to the Canadian economy. Boasting more than 470 games companies and over 20,000 employees, it’s one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors – but which games are driving this demand?
From online slots and casinos to immersive action games, there’s a huge range of entertainment available, with plenty of other games here. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most popular games in Canada, so that you’ll never be stuck when deciding what to play again.
- Slot Games
In both online and traditional land casinos, slot games are consistently one of the most popular games amongst Canadian players. (In the United States, 48% of casino visitors also agreed that slot games were their top choice when choosing what to play).
The popularity of slot games is partly down to the fact that they offer us instant gratification. Unlike table games that rely on strategy, slots are a great choice for gamblers that are looking for quick wins without having to worry about learning rules or trying to read other players.
Slot games are also incredibly versatile. Games developers such as Microgaming, IGT, and Playtech have released a wide range of slots that are themed around our favorite films, TV shows, and even books.
With their impressive graphics and authentic soundtracks, it’s no wonder so many Canadians gravitate towards slot games when deciding which game to play.
- Fortnite Battle Royale
In May 2020, Epic Games – the developer behind the ‘Fortnite’ franchise – announced on Twitter that the game had 350 million registered accounts around the world. Thanks to the staggering success of the annual Fortnite World Cup, the game has maintained high numbers of players ever since its release (and clocks up billions of hours of gameplay every month).
It’s also broken a number of world records. From the most concurrent Twitch viewers in a single stream, to the number of consoles it supports, there’s no doubt that ‘Fortnite’ is one of the most widely talked about games in Canada – and in the rest of the world.
- Dota 2
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle game. Developed by Valve Corporation as a sequel to the game ‘Defense of the Ancients’, Dota 2 is played in teams and is a prominent part of the eSports industry. Its worldwide leagues and tournaments has made it a popular choice in Canada, which hosted the International Dota 2 Championships for the first time in 2018.
Held in Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the 2018 International had a prize pool of over $25 million which was partially crowdfunded via the game’s battle pass system. This figure skyrocketed to over $34 million the following year, showing that the popularity of Dota 2 has only increased over time.
Many Canadians have taken advantage of the game’s popularity by betting on the outcomes of matches. Both specialised eSports platforms and online casinos now enable their visitors to get in on the action by placing wagers on which team they think will win. As a result, Dota 2 has a huge online following from players, spectators, and gamblers alike.
From iGaming to eSports, Canada’s most popular games entertain millions of people every day. Which games will make the list next year?
