On a cold, cold day, I crossed the bridge and went to check out Winterlude’s celebrations in Québec. Jacques Cartier Park had been turned into a winter amusement park, complete with the ubiquitous beavertails’ snack booths and giant snow slides.
Ottawa has ice sculptures, Québec has giant snow ones. The theme of the national Snow Sculpture Competition for this year was “winter fun”. Each team was given a huge 3.7 m x 4.9 m block of snow and beautiful winter themed art pieces were created.
You can see the full set of the pictures taken during Winterlude 2010 here.
Oh wow, so impressive!

Oh… I always wanted to have a pair of snow rackets!
Can you imagine me wearing them in London when we have snow?
I am sure everybody will stare at me like a freak?! Ha ha…
I heard that people in Moscow always have attachable snow shoe soles in their bags!!

Hmm… Global warming, I guess!
Re: Pancake Day / 煎饼节 / Hari Penkek / パンケーキデー
We do have maple syrup here but they are not so popular (yet!).
Have you tried golden syrup? It’s the British equivalence to Canadian maple syrup.
Re: Irises & Apples / 鸢尾和苹果 / Iris & Epal / 菖蒲と林檎
哈哈,我也有同感。是有点贵!
还是加拿大、美国比较好。

Lot of artists in Canada!
Nice !

So creative and so much fun there 😀
The snow sculpture is cool. How do you get a solid block of snow like that. I thought snow was soft. Clearly I am not an expert of snow.

There’s more snow in those snow sculptures than in my entire neighbourhood!

I have never seen the snow sculpture beside the snowman 🙂 These are fantastic! These must be made with dry snow,, and do they stay longer than the ice sculpture? I have seen the sand sculpture and ice sculpture. People do utilize its environment very well! I am glad I get see these on your post!

Oh nice snow sculptures! Now I know that when I want to see one, I don’t need to go all the way to Hokkaido!

These are maybe more amazing than the ice sculptures. It seems to me that it would be much harder to sculpt the snow than the ice. The detail on some of them is really incredible!
I hope you’re planning a post about the Olympics. Is everyone totally geeked or already sick of them?

great photos, zhu.
i love the detail (facial expressions! my snowmen always looked looked like blobs of snow with sticks stuck in them).
i guess everyone wears color so they don’t get lost in the snow.
well, it looks like fun. if you have to live in snow, you might as well have fun– it’s much better than hibernating in a cave for months on end.

Ooh, this looks beautiful. I love the new thing you added to the top banner (quite recently I believe) that looks like a paper cut 🙂

terrific sculptures! i love it!

The sculptures are great!
Is the flag in ‘ice fishing’ pic that of the Province of Ontario?

@Agnes – Winter, the Canadian way 😉
@London Caller – I must admit I have never tried them but I’m sure you do get good muscle from walking a mile or two with them!
@Sidney – Snow artists 😉
@shionge – I know, we are lucky!
@Tulsa Gentleman – Huge blocks of snow are delivered to the artists, it’s the sticky-almost-frozen kind of snow. Only in Canada, of course.
@Beth – I can imagine! You guys had like no snow when I was there a couple of months ago.
@micki – Yes, they can stay quite long, longer than the ice sculptures it seems. They are much bigger too… snow doesn’t melt that easily.
@Linguist-in-Waiting – Do they have it in Japan too? I had no idea!
@Soleil – I should blog about the Olympics but I think because we are so far from Vancouver, I don’t have much to say. We watch them on T.V, like every body else. Not much happening other than that here in Ontario!
@Seraphine – I can’t make nice snowmen, I always get frozen hands before they are finished. Too bad!
@Nigel – It is exactly that… paper cuts I scanned 😉
@Charles Dastodd – Thank you!
@khengsiong – Yes, it’s the Ontario flag. The other one you can see is Nunavut’s.
That is such an inventive idea! 🙂

This is just breath taking and amazing piece of snow art – wonderful photos Zhu!
I think there is some like the same show in Oslo within a week or so – I’ll keep you posted 🙂
