Appreciating Visual Arts is a Learning Curve

What kind of art moves you the most? What’s the creative discipline you enjoy best? Literature, performing arts, visual arts?

Have you ever listened to a song over and over again because it’s beautiful and it really speaks to you? Are there novels you can read several times and enjoy even though you already know the story? Do you find yourself tapping your feet and moving arms when you see other people dancing? Is there a painting you can picture clearly in your head when you close your eyes because you looked at it times and times again?

Music, photography drawing and literature speak to me—these works often make me “feel feelings.”

I’m less receptive to painting, poetry, sculpture and filmmaking. Occasionally, I really like something, but I mostly acknowledge it’s well executed or unique in conception. I’m rarely truly moved by such works of art.

A visit to the museum with my parents is always a treat because I can see how moved they are by what they see. They truly appreciate visual arts.

I’m trying to see the intent behind the technique.

Maybe one day a painting will move me too.

Visual arts are more complex than they seem. I don’t think you can just look at something and get it right away.
