“Nah, we have to leave the beach with clothes on.”
“Why?”
“Because walking around in your swimsuit is a €135 fine”, I explained, pointing to the sign.
“WHAT? Even if we’re just crossing the harbour to the other beach? Those people are crazy.”
I agree. Rich, cliquey, and crazy.
Last Sunday, Mark and I ended up in La Baule, a timeless resort close to Nantes that’s somewhat forced to welcome peons like us. Posh families who have been holidaying there for generations probably see us like pesky migrants, except we don’t arrive in small boats, but by train.
This is La Baule’s greatest tragedy. It’s not a gated community but a town with a train station, and it’s easily accessible from Nantes.
Don’t even try to fit in, you won’t. The bourgeoisie social codes are impossible to decipher and adopt if you’re an outsider because the very survival of this social class depends on maintaining segregation and cultural gatekeeping. I’m always amazed that in 2023, such people still exist and somehow manage to live in their own little world.
And so we walked from Pornichet, the far end of the beach, to Le Pouliguen, the other end, where we spent the day hanging out at posh plage Benoît. The small lighthouse is the informal “centre” with smartly dressed people go watch the informal parade of fancy boats leaving the harbour.
The next day, we headed to Les Sables-d’Olonnes again, where the atmosphere is much more relaxed and normal.
It was one of these days when the weather was all over the place. It felt like being in a car with that annoying passenger who changes radio station every minute and you never have the chance to listen to an entire song—it was cloudy and windy, then sunny and hot, then cloudy and humid, then stormy but not windy, and more.
It was hot but cloudy when we arrived, so we decided to explore the harbour and the massive lighthouse before going to the beach.
Unlike in La Baule, this is a proper, useful lighthouse, with actual fishermen and sailors.
Posh people have shitty taste. Les Sables-d’Olonne is much more authentic and atmospheric.
