We thought it was smoke, at first—not such a crazy idea considering the number of fires ripping through Europe this year, we saw one in Nantes just the day before.
It was only when we got off the train that we realized it was fog, and the entire city was being swallowed by it in front of our eyes.
This was just the latest weather oddity to date this summer.
“I didn’t bring a sweater,” I said. “I hope it won’t get cold on the beach.”
Mark shrugged. “I mean, it was really hot this morning, it’s not your fault.”
It was already 35⁰C when we left Nantes at 11 a.m. for our fourth trip to the beach that week—like everyone, we were looking for water, for a slight breeze.
Then I booked a sailing lesson in Les Sables d’Olonne on Thursday, just to spice up the day trip. It was very fun but there was no wind at all, which is a bit of a bummer when you’re on a schooner. It wasn’t any cooler at sea either.
Then we went to Saint-Gilles, where we spent the entire day in the water because even the sand was burning hot.
And here we were, on Saturday, back to Les Sables, where boats, buildings and beachgoers were disappearing into the fog. The temperatures didn’t drop and it didn’t rain either, so no need for a sweater, phew.
Temperatures are a bit cooler this week—probably no day trip to the beach, I’ll try to come up with something fun.
