Delicious Baguette, Voting, Beach Trip and More French Priorities

Mark’s priority in France was to eat baguette bread.

Mine was to vote.

Voting as a French abroad is perfectly legal, highly recommended, and notoriously tricky like anything French involving bureaucracy. I vote in most elections and I’m familiar with hours-long lineups at the French embassy in Ottawa. A few years ago, I also fought with the consulate who removed me from the list of electors for mysterious French bureaucracy reasons.

And this time, I had to figure out how to vote as a French abroad since I would be in France for the two rounds of this last-minute ill-advised election.

It mattered to me since the far right has never been as close to power.

Oh, fuck.

This time, French citizens abroad were encouraged to vote online a few days before election day for the rest of France. “Perfect,” I thought. “I’ll vote when I arrive.”

Except another email warned me that my login ID would be sent by email and my password by text—and obviously, the consulate has my Canadian phone number. I quickly changed it to my French cellphone number and hoped it would work as planned.

And while Mark was eating his first baguette sandwich of the trip, I connected to the website and tried to vote. It didn’t work the first time but it got through the second time.

I mean, seriously, the far-right party? Come on, people! Wake up!

Then we went to the beach because this is one priority Mark and I can agree on. Les Sables d’Olonne was still relatively quiet, getting ready for the summer rush.

Saturday was apocalyptic with a dark cloudy sky and occasional rain.

“Last day of freedom before the fascists win,” my mum sighed.

I hummed the Chant des partisans.

Then at the end of the day, it stopped raining and we spotted an amazing rainbow.

Maybe there’s hope. We’ll see tomorrow, on voting day.
