I was so busy marvelling at the absence of snow in France that I forgot it was December, and that the weather is rather gloomy at this time of the year.
In Nantes and in most of Brittany, it means rain. A lot of it.
Since I grew up in Nantes, I consider rainy days a fact of life and getting soaked is a minor annoyance but I am used to it, much like Canadians with snow. I rarely bother carrying an umbrella because when I do 1) it usually doesn’t rain at all and I look like an idiot with my umbrella for the rest of the day 2) the wind is so strong it breaks them easily.
Bretons (people living in Brittany) take the rain with stoicism and pragmatism. If you can find shelter, great—have a smoke, a beer or whatever and wait for the downpour to stop. If you are caught in a storm… well, keep on walking and bitch about it later.
In Saint-Michel, it was very stormy. Again, this is pretty common around Christmas time. I still remember the huge storm we had in 1999—I went to see the sea with my father and we could barely stand by the beach!
This time, it wasn’t so bad—just a lot of rain, strong winds and huge waves crashing on the lighthouse.

And I almost always forget an umbrella when I need it most… but then yes, you look like a goof carrying one around after the fact.
These trees look so different to me, no leaves yet no snow!
