I really shouldn’t have stepped into the Mercado Central right after breakfast. No because I was grossed out by all the meat on display but because the food looked delicious, and I was full!
San José’s central market is located right on the busy Avenida Central and occupies an entire block. Outside, people sell fruits, veggies and lottery tickets and the latter seem to be by far the most popular stall.
Inside, it’s a mix of pura vida souvenirs, bags and accessories, meat and spices and sodas—these small food stalls offering set lunches for a small price. Locals seem to favour them and they were getting busy close to noon.
