Part of my “I’m a mother and I love my son, but hell, I’m also a human being!” project is to reconnect with my passions, including photography. Sure, I take hundreds of baby pictures with my beloved Nikon, but baby Mark shouldn’t be my only focus—although, of course, he is a big part of my life!
So I recently started to focus on other projects—stuff that doesn’t include changing diapers, burping, cleaning up various body fluids… you know!—including my “People of Ottawa” set. I love candid shots and street photography, and spring weather is the perfect time to roam around the city with my camera again.
Maybe it’s my voyeur side but observing strangers in the street is fascinating, and capturing a moment is always rewarding.
I took the pictures below on Parliament Hill, Rideau Street, Rideau Centre, MacKenzie King Bridge, at Confederation Park and in the business district, using a simple 18-55 mm lens and my Nikon D60. I took some of the shots on Mother’s Day, hence the number of people with flowers!

Great photos. Your street photography really captures the essence of life. You are great at doing this. Keep it up.
Your travel journal of Central America, last year,(where you obviously made Mark), is a very useful traveler’s resource.
I look forward to reading reports of your first overseas journey with young Mark.
Thank you Mark! Yep, Mark was made in Mexico… or Honduras 😉
That’s definitely a candid shot: a dog in the middle of what seems to be an upcoming bowel movement! 😛
😆 No, I think he held it!
I love these series of people… Taking pictures of strangers is still something I want to do (I need some bravery right there).
My very favorite one is the “Got Change” one – I love the reflection of people.
No need to be brave… most people don’t mind photographers or pay little attention to them 😉
Tes photos sont géniales Zhu! 🙂 C’est dingue comme tu as l’oleil et tu sais prendre les moments tout bête mais ça fait de superbe tranche de vie 🙂
Bisous! 🙂
Merci madame!
I missed tHese somehow. I love it when you do this! It is great, although I don’t know how you get away with sneak photography without people clocking you!! Love the one of the couple arguing!
Most people don’t care about photographers!
