Between adjusting the clock backward and the short late fall days, the sun now sets around 4:30 p.m. The downsides are obvious—everyone feels tired and it’s hard to go back home in the dark. But on the plus side, we regularly get to see wonderful sunsets.
I’ve seen amazing sky all week but I didn’t have my camera with me at work. So on Saturday, I pretended to study the sky scientifically and predicted another amazing sunset. At 4:00 p.m., I made my way to Parliament Hill, one of the best spots to watch it.
And of course, it was cloudy and there was no sun.
I complained about it for a few minutes (my bitchy French side) and eventually decided the cloudy sky was picture worthy (my upbeat Canadian side).
The pictures turned out pretty nice actually. I didn’t use any filters but I played with the colour balance and the exposure when shooting. I love that dramatic sky! It really looked like the clouds engulfed the skyline.

Congratulations Zhu! Your photos are great! Specially the blues ones! +1
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed them.
Whoa!!! So beautiful just like falling in love again 😀
Night skies are unique, aren’t they?
I love your photos and you’ve done a great job of capturing the clouds. Also your comment about your bitchy French side and your upbeat Canadian side made me laugh.
Ah yeah, I have two sides now 😆
It’s interesting – through your wonderful photos, I’m able to “see” my capital city in ways I was never able to before. Thanks!
I’m glad you enjoyed the shots!
I like the dark feel of these photos. You’re right, actually I think the cloudy sky is actually better: I hate it when it is too sunny that there is only one source of light for the picture, and it is worse when the subject is unmovable and so you cannot get a good shot because of a strong backlight.
Yep, sometimes the sun is your worst enemy in photography! Although I like sun flares.
Gazebo. For some reason, I’ve always loved this word. (yeah, that’s all I have to say! :D)
Do we say that in French too? I think we do, right?
Ahah! That’s a good question because when I was traveling somewhere in the US, I couldn’t remember what was the french word for it for a MONTH! It drove me crazy. And I think “gazebo” in french is an anglicisme. It’s a kiosque in fact!
*Facepalm*
Right. Ahem. Good thing I’m not teaching French anymore 😆
Amazing! can’t wait to see those skies 🙂
You’ll love them, very different from Europe I find!
Zhu Zhu,
Autumn does generate magical sunsets (so full of colour).
The night begins to fall at 16:30? I wish I could be shocked, but I can’t cause the same used to happen here, but not any longer (I don’t know what happened but some say that the Japanese earthquake had something to do with it); now the night falls at 17:30.
I absolutely enjoyed your pics, as always.
Cheerio
I think in France sunset is always about an hour later than Canada, summer or winter.
How beautiful!!! This gives me flashbacks of last night while I was rushing home to put the kid to sleep, all the while wishing I could stop and take shots of the still night, all dawned in Christmas garb. Ah… Maybe again one day…
I miss a lot of sunset, usually I’m in the bus!
Oh, all the twilight photos are fantastic! The beautiful sky makes me think of the Northern Light and Santa. I don’t know why, but I’m just having these feelings. 🙂
I have never seen Northern Lights but I’d love too, it looks magic!
Your photos are just stunning ! I just love love love the Parlement Hill. The view from this place is just wonderful and it really shows well in your photos.
Thank you! I love the Hill too and I never get sick of going there. Such a great open place, with awesome views on Gatineau and the downtown core!
