Gumball Machines, Gatineau, February 2012

When I was a kid in France, chewing gums (called “le chewing gum”) were pretty popular, mostly because it was banned at school and because brands such as “Hollywood Chewing Gum” and “Malabar”, the French bubble gum, were trying to convince us that it was the coolest thing around.

Chewing gum was introduced in France by WWII American soldiers and it remained a little piece of exoticism for most French.

Although I’m not a huge fan of sweets and rarely have candy or chewing gum (I like mints, that’s about it!), I found these gumball machines at the mall very picturesque. And only a quarter too! That’s quite a bargain for a huge piece of gum.

I love bubble gums but I can’t chew them anymore because my jawbone has been damaged because I was chewing too much gum 🙁

    Great photo, Zhu!

    The color is faaaaaabulous!

This image reminded me of when I was a kid and would always BEG my mother for a quarter to get a gumball and toy from the gumball machine at the grocery store.

I no longer chew gum, but like you…I love mints!

    Happy weekend!

Did you? That’s funny it was the same price back then.

    Hi Zhu,

Whenever something is so fun and colorful, you know that the photo will be very interesting!
Then, it takes me back to older times also, when it was exciting to put in a quarter and turn the noisy handle before you got a surprise or candy.

Thanks for sharing some happiness 🙂

Used to love gumball machines – and the gumballs. Now I’m a bit wary as to breaking/chipping a tooth!
    Colourful picture!

I love how gumballs look and used to devour them as a child, but they are really bad for your teeth and jaws. Plus, I hate how fast the flavour runs out of them!

That’s why I don’t like gums I think, the flavour just doesn’t last.

I definitely saw people chewing gum in S’pore! I think buying them is hard but the government relaxed the law a few years ago.
