Canada, Home of Scary Weather and Many Alerts

“Hey. Can you pick me up? Your country is trying to kill me again.”

“What did China do this time?”

“Not China, the other one. Open the curtains. Turn your head to the right. Look out of the window.”

“Oh yeah, looks dark over there.”

“Darker where I am. My phone is buzzing like crazy with weather alerts.”

“Let’s see…”

I can hear Feng typing. He is checking with God, i.e., The Weather Network.

I did hesitate before making a detour to the Chinese supermarket after the gym. It’s only a ten-minute walk away and I was craving fresh Shanghai noodles. I had been warned about thunderstorms around 5:35, but at 5:30, the sky was blue, it was hot and sunny, and I could already picture a comforting bowl of scallion oil noodles, so I went.

When I walked out of the supermarket, the sky looked like this.

I did hesitate for a couple of minutes before calling Feng. The gym is a 25-minute walk from home, half an hour maybe from the Chinese supermarket. I can walk. I don’t mind walking. Scratch that, I enjoy walking, although maybe not along fucking Merivale Road.

But I ended up calling Feng because, after all, I did call him a bit too late when the first of several tornadoes hit Ottawa in 2018. And I didn’t call him either when I accidentally discovered what a derecho was in 2022. And after all, I rarely ask for rides. It’s not like I call him whenever it starts raining. I’m a big girl. I take shelter… or not, and I get home soaked, where Feng tells me I should have called him and really, come on, Juliette, take a shower or you’re going to catch a cold—sorry, I grew up in Brittany, I shiver when it’s under 10 C but I’m 100% waterproof, it’s my special power.

“Where are you?”

“Merivale. Past the Tim Hortons.”

“You may be able to make it if you walk fast.”

“How fast?”

“It’s going to hit at 6:30 p.m.”

“Okay, I’ll call back if I’m stuck. Is Mark home?”

“Nah, he went out a while ago. Let’s see if he can spot severe weather…”

We’re terrible parents—we’re not always entirely sure where our 12-year-old kid is. Now, Mark walks back from school, stops by to eat, and then disappears for hours with his friends. Most of the time, they play football at the park. Once in a while, they bike to school—at least that’s what he claims.

I kept on walking but I can’t walk that fast with my gym bag plus two packs of noodles, scallions, eggplants, various seasoning sauces and frozen bāozi.

And meanwhile, the sky was getting darker and darker.

I called back when the first lighting struck.

“I’m stopping at Shoppers. Can you pick me up?”

We drove back in the rain. You could barely see anything.

A few blocks lost power. We also lost about 20 °C, it’s cold and damp this weekend.

But hey, lovely rainbows!
